Prominent North Korea Expert Indicted for Secretly Working for Seoul

Former CIA Analyst Accused of Passing Confidential Information

A prominent expert on North Korea and former CIA analyst, Sue Mi Terry, has been indicted by a New York grand jury on charges of secretly working for the South Korean government.

Terry, who is a North Korea expert with the Council on Foreign Relations, was charged with acting as an agent for Seoul after leaving the CIA in 2011. She is accused of passing on confidential information to South Korea's government and lobbying for the country's interests in exchange for cash, luxury bags, fancy meals, and expensive clothes.

Terry was born in South Korea and moved to the United States as a child. She worked for the US government from 2001 to 2011, including stints at the CIA and the State Department. She is a highly respected expert on North Korea and has written extensively on the country's nuclear program and foreign policy.

The indictment against Terry is the first time that a former US government official has been charged with secretly working for a foreign government since the end of the Cold War. The charges against her are serious and carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Terry has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court again in May.
