Kolkata News: Doctors' Strike Weakens CM Mamata's Position, Leading to Police Transfers

CM Mamata on Back Foot as Junior Doctors' Strike Continues

The ongoing strike by junior doctors in Kolkata has put Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the back foot. Amidst growing public anger, Banerjee has been forced to transfer several key police officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

The strike, which began on June 11, has crippled healthcare services in Kolkata. Over 1,000 junior doctors from various government hospitals have joined the strike, demanding better working conditions and a pay hike.

Doctors Allege Harassment, Demand Action

The junior doctors allege that they have been subjected to harassment and violence by the hospital administration and police. They claim that they have been threatened and even beaten by police officers during the strike.

The doctors are demanding the suspension of the Medical College Principal and the transfer of the Kolkata Police Commissioner, alleging that they have failed to protect the doctors from violence.

Government Responds with Transfers

In response to the strike, the state government has transferred several senior police officers, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Anuj Sharma. The government has also set up a committee to look into the demands of the junior doctors.

However, the doctors have rejected the government's response, saying that it is not enough to address their concerns. They say they will continue their strike until their demands are met.

Strike Impacting Healthcare Services

The strike has had a significant impact on healthcare services in Kolkata. Many government hospitals are operating with a skeleton staff, and patients are facing long delays for treatment.

The strike has also raised concerns about the quality of healthcare in Kolkata. Many patients are now opting for private hospitals, which are often more expensive and less accessible to the poor.

Government Urges Doctors to Return to Work

The state government has urged the junior doctors to return to work, saying that their strike is causing unnecessary hardship to patients.

The government has offered to hold talks with the doctors, but the doctors have so far refused, saying that they will not negotiate until their demands are met.
