Five New Sports Added to Olympic Programme for LA28

Summer Olympics 2028 to Feature Baseball, Softball, Cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse, and Squash

Breaking Not Included in LA28 After Debut in Paris 2024

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the inclusion of five new sports in the programme for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. The new additions are baseball, softball, cricket, flag football, and lacrosse. Squash will also be included, making its Olympic debut.

The IOC's decision follows a review of the proposal submitted by the LA28 Organizing Committee. The committee recommended the inclusion of these sports based on their popularity, accessibility, and potential to engage new audiences. Breaking, which was introduced as a new sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics, has been dropped from the programme for 2028.

The addition of these new sports brings the total number of sports in the Olympic programme to 28. The 2028 Games will also see the transition of skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing from optional to permanent events.

The inclusion of baseball and softball marks their return to the Olympics after being removed from the programme following the 2008 Beijing Games. Cricket, which is popular in many countries around the world, will make its Olympic debut in 2028. Flag football, a variation of American football played with a smaller field and fewer players, will also be making its Olympic debut.
