Warning Signs Of A Phishing Email

What is phishing?

A phishing email is an email that is disguised to look like it's from a real company, like a bank or a government agency. But it's actually from a scammer who's trying to steal your personal information, like your password, credit card number, or Social Security number.

How can you tell if an email is a phishing email?

Here are some common red flags:

  • The email address of the sender doesn't match the name of the company.
  • The email contains typos or grammatical errors.
  • The email asks you to click a link or open an attachment.
  • The email creates a sense of urgency.
  • The email threatens you with consequences if you don't take action.

If you think you've received a phishing email, what should you do?

Don't click any links or open any attachments. Instead, report the email to the company that it's supposedly from. You can also forward the email to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov.

How can you protect yourself from phishing emails?

    Here are some tips:

  • Be careful about the emails you open.
  • Never click on links or open attachments from people you don't know.
  • Keep your software up to date.
  • Be aware of the latest phishing scams.
  • Use a strong password and don't reuse it across multiple accounts.
