On Sunday night, April 24, 2023, the northern lights, or aurora borealis, were visible in Illinois and other northern states, including Canada.
Videos and photographs of the celestial phenomenon were shared widely on social media. The aurora borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. These particles create colorful light displays that are typically seen in the polar regions during periods of high solar activity.
While the aurora borealis is not uncommon in Illinois, it is rare to see it as far south as the state. The last time the northern lights were visible in Illinois was in March 2015.
